Argentina
In January 2007, El Choque Urbano first performed in Europe during a five week tour of The Netherlands. The success was overwhelming. Nearly every performance was sold-out and awarded with foot stamping audience applause. The reviews in the country's five leading newspapers were fantastic.
El Choque Urbano, or simply El Choque was first established in Buenos Aires in 2002 in a period when Argentina was in economic and political crisis. People would go out on the street playing on pots and pans demonstrating against the administration in power and demanding for the government to step down.
The result is a performance with a humorous, though confronting storyline which evolves around two workers in a factory that challenge each other in a struggle for power over the other workers in the factory. This battle is delivered through new rhythms and sounds. The group-members deploy any thinkable object to make music on, ranging from basketballs, to frying pans, tins, and even plastic bags. The music they make is all perfectly orchestrated to a score that effortlessly fuses between tap, malambo and traditional Argentinean rhythms. The dialogues in the performance are in fantasy language which makes the show accessible to audiences of any language and age.
